  • Change the Default Star Shape in Illustrator

How can I change the default Star shape in Illustrator to get a six pointed star, a pointed circle, a starfish or just a longer, leaner star?

Performed on a Mac using Illustrator CS6.
Tools used: Star Tool, Shift and Command (⌘) Keys

    Time: 6:17

Here’s another “Advanced” (that just means longer than one minute) Tutorial from One Minute Digital. I get asked very often how to change the default star shape in Illustrator to a longer armed, leaner star, a 6 pointed star, a pointed circle or a starburst shape. I have done a few tutorials on modifying the default star shape in Illustrator, but in this tutorial I will show you how to make 9 different shapes using only Illustrator’s Star Tool and a few key commands.

Change the Default Star Shape in IllustratorThe default star shape in Illustrator is cute, but a little chubby and sometimes we need to have a different custom shape. All you need to do is select the Star Tool, hold down Shift, click and drag. While holding down Shift, DON’T LET GO OF YOUR MOUSE and hit the Command key (⌘). You will see your star shape magically transform before your eyes and you can make it do whatever you want. Because the world is your oyster, my dears.

      Hi there,
For the third and fifth stars, it’s easier and more precise to hold the Option (Alt) key while dragging instead of fiddling with the Command key. It sets both radiuses so that the branches are perfectly aligned.
